Lovink splices for Pulrose bridge reconstruction

Reliable 33kV cable splices power major bridge project on the Isle of Man

Manx Utilities Authority (MUA) has been a loyal user of LoviSil® cable splices for more than two decades. Their recent infrastructure upgrade on Pulrose Road Bride, a vital power corridor, clearly demonstrates the value of reliable, easy-to-install medium voltage cable joints.

Pulrose Road: crucial route for power distribution

Pulrose Road hosts four 33kV cable circuits, making it one of the Isle of Man’s most critical routes for power distribution. These cables are essential for two reasons. Firstly, they transfer electricity from the Isle of Man to the UK National Grid. Secondly, they supply power to approximately 20,000 local residents and businesses.

Complex high voltage circuits

In 2020, the Isle of Man’s Department of Infrastructure began a major bridge replacement project. This work posed unique challenges, as several 33kV and 11kV high voltage circuits and low-voltage lines crossed directly through the site. To reduce service disruptions, the project was divided into two phases.

During planning, engineers had to design permanent diversions for these critical circuits. As a result, the team required a splice solution that was not only fast to install but also highly reliable in the long term.

Long-term trust in Lovink Splicing kits

MUA has used Lovink’s 11kV splicing kits since the 1990s. In 2018, the team adopted 33kV LoviSil® cable joints to connect polymeric to polymeric singles. For the Pulrose Road project, they installed:

  • 24 x 33kV LoviSil® M Series cable joints

  • 12 x 11kV LoviSil® M Series cable joints

Thanks to this setup, MUA successfully rerouted all affected medium voltage circuits without delay.

On-site results and positive feedback on the MV splices

The on-site team reported excellent results. Because of the simple, flame-free installation, engineers returned all circuits to service on schedule. Consequently, the overall project finished on time and within budget.

Kevin Kniveton, Cable Assets Engineer at Manx Utilities, shared his thoughts: “Manx Utilities has been using Lovink cable joints for over 20 years. The splices are constantly evolving to make installation easier while maintaining a high level of reliability. We also appreciate the shift to using recycled ABS in the outer shells. This supports our goals of lowering environmental impact.”
